Safety First

Updated: Jan 3, 2023

It amazes me the amount of people that will swing a leg over a horse that they can’t even control well on the ground. When you swing a leg over a horse’s spine, you are committed…and I don’t give a shit how good of a rider you think you are, if a horse is committed to getting you off his back, he damn sure can. I’ve seen horses flip over backwards or roll forward and crush or kill people. There was a horse trainer named Gordon McKinley that said ‘There are a lot of heroes in the graveyard.’ Meaning there are a lot of people that rode or put themselves around horses that had no respect on the ground and killed them. Groundwork shouldn’t be something you just half-ass do to a bare minimum with a young horse just to get on him and then never do again- groundwork is the foundation to a truly safe and well trained horse. It’s just that simple. You’d be amazed at the progress you can make with a horse under saddle when he is respectful on the ground first.
