When horses are in a herd, they don’t trust the lead mare because she’s the nicest and caters to them all. People often think their horse should love and trust them because they feed them, and give them treats, and brush them, etc. - that is the furthest thing from the the truth. Horses in a herd respect the lead mare because she constantly proves she can move the other horse’s feet any time she wants. The horses in the herd trust the lead mare with their lives because she earned their respect first. Truly earning your horse’s respect and trust starts with establishing a foundation you can build on.
