Lessons Learned

One of the most valuable lessons I learned as a horseman is the more you are affectionate to a horse without ever asking him to move his feet, the more disrespectful and dangerous he will become. I remember when I was younger, I would get so frustrated with my horse because I cared for him a lot, so l couldn’t figure out why he was so awful when I’d take him out of his pen. I had no control and I quickly lost confidence handling him. In fact, it took that horse severely injuring me to learn that horses just don’t reciprocate your love for them because you love them- A horse only respects a good leader. Why do horses only respect a good leader? Because a horse’s primary concern is safety. There are others, but safety is number one. Until you know how to show your horse you’re a worthy leader, you will always feel discouraged and lack control.
